Mental Health Research in Liberia

Eleven master’s students majoring in Advanced Practice Psychiatric-Mental Health master program will present three studies that are been developed as part of mental health research in Liberia. The studies are part of partnership plans for the Research Sustainability Initiative In Liberia (R E T A I N) and with several institutions including the Ministry of Health of Liberia, Carter Center, and Roads To Health to expand awareness and services for mental health in Liberia.

Exploring the Roads to Rural, Hard to Reach, and Other Vulnerable Population Health

If we hold true (which we do) to the definition of health by the World Health Organization (WHO) that: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity", then we should target several approaches to reach that goal. It is customary to think of health in the prism of the medical model. Equally important is to explore the roles of social factors that appear to play even more important influence. This is particularly evident for those who are poor, powerless, and with limited access to needed services. The wide inequality seen in all societies globally must be mitigated if everyone has to live healthy lives. The health of vulnerable populations is inescapably intertwined to everyone else including higher use of resources when they are sick because they cannot access primary/preventive health services, are part of the travel chains (e.g., spread of infectious and communicable diseases such as Ebola and flu...), and rely on social services we all pay into. Our approaches are to use several 'ROADS' including health, education, agriculture, cultural/traditional....to reach this utopian state of health. However, because we understand that reaching this perfect state is generally elusive or very hard to achieve, we take approaches to reach optimal health in the context of target communities toward primary health services.

WHAT WE DO

Community

COMMUNITY We work with community members to assess, plan, and target areas of priority with emphases on using low cost local resources. We also enlist the services of stakeholders who are either directly (e.g., those who were born, originate, or have family members from the respective communities) or indirectly (with interest to provide help) related to the specific communities. To develop a community-based program, it is most logical to work from within the community using gatekeepers.

Research

Use data from the community and health programs to develop evidence- based....programs Database development for health informatics programs to increase timely reporting, interpretation, and understanding of trend data. Community-based participatory research approaches Prevalence and cross-sectional studies to measure disease burden We will begin a longitudinal maternal child health study to follow pregnant women until children are one year old in November/December 2015.

Community outreach and health education programs to promote healthy behaviors and disease prevention

Community outreach and health education programs are vital in promoting healthy behaviors and preventing diseases by providing education and resources to empower individuals to make positive lifestyle changes.

Coordination and referral services to connect individuals with specialized care or resources, such as mental health services or social assistance programs.

Coordination and referral services play a crucial role in connecting individuals to specialized care and resources, ensuring they receive the support they need to improve their overall well-being.

Partnerships with agricultural organizations to promote access to

"Collaborating with agricultural organizations can help promote equitable access to resources and technologies for farmers to improve productivity and sustainability."

Collaborative initiatives with local schools and education programs to address health issues affecting children and improve overall well-being.

Our targeted ‘Roads’ are, therefore, based on the following Below

  • Exploring and using community-based primary health care approaches to manage the interplays of factors that affect the health status of rural and vulnerable people
  • Integrating existing systems (health, education, agricultures, social programs….) with community and external resources to improve primary health for vulnerable and rural population
  • Community-based participation, the Community as prime movers,….
  • Program based but driven by research/evidence-based focus As ‘cashless’ as possible….fund to target developments (human/training/education, access/roads, infrastructures, equipment, housing for rural staffs....)
  • Providing simple, inexpensive, and targeted services in rural areas and among vulnerable population can help to reduce several key poor health poor health indicators (maternal and child health, water and sanitation, and spread of infectious diseases).
